On April 2, the FDA announced that respiratory equipment manufacturer Dräger Medical, Telford, Pa, has issued a recall of its optional PS500 power supply unit used with the Evita V500 and Babylog VN500 ventilators. According to the agency, the voluntary recall resulted from a company investigation into complaints about battery life. Dräger found that a low battery charge in some cases may only be indicated after the battery is totally depleted.

The recall applies to Evita V500 and Babylog VN5000 ventilators equipped with the PS500 power supply and distributed between June 2011 and January 2014. The company will replace the batteries in the power supply free of charge as “an interim solution” until it develops a permanent fix. For more details on the recall, read the FDA recall notification.
