By 2020, 80% of healthcare services will be delivered by just 150 to 200 “super regional” facilities. In the same time frame, as the portion of healthcare consumed by patients with chronic diseases rises, patient volume at acute healthcare facilities will decline, while rising up to 18% at outpatient settings.
The implications of these and other macro healthcare trends for clinical engineering departments were the subject of a free April 15 webcast hosted by 24×7. Sponsored and organized by GE Healthcare, “Using Data and Analytics to Inform Business Decisions” featured a live, hour-long discussion that included speakers from two healthcare systems. Greg Doherty, executive director of clinical asset management for UnityPoint Health, and Tim Riehm, vice president of technology management for Banner Health, described how their networks have used data-driven strategies to achieve measurable business outcomes.

Among the trends he discussed in the session were the potential for increased consolidation among healthcare facilities, escalating costs of healthcare and reimbursement pressures, and the shift in patient care from high-cost acute facilities to outpatient and nontraditional settings.
