National Biomedical/ Clinical Engineering Appreciation Week approaches—May 10 through 16—how will you celebrate?

The Ohio Clinical Engineering Association will mark the week by offering its members a free seminar, “How to Slash your Biomed Budget in 2009,” presented by Patrick Lynch, CCE, CBET.

Sponsored by AAMI’s Technology Management Council (TMC), National Biomedical/ Clinical Engineering Appreciation Week offers the perfect chance to spread the word about the profession, not only in your hospital but in the community as well. The TMC Web site has suggestions on what you can do. Do you have ideas or plans in place? Comment on this blog to let us know and spread the word!

I attended the Northwest Ohio OCEA meeting with special guest Pat Lynch. What I took away from that night was the need to unify the Biomed world. We as a community do need to have a list of standards in job titles/functions. Are you a biomed or a clinical engineer?? I believe these two job functions are different in my eyes but not in the eyes of nursing or senior management.

The presentation on how to slash your budget was outstanding info. But this change from having OEM doing the ongoing maintenance needed and bringing it in house is based on having the training budget to be able to get the knowledge to do the job properly. Training monies are as rare as hens teeth. I might as well ask for money to find bigfoot, the holy grail, fill-in-the blank here. I know I am preaching to the choir here but I have not seen a trend of the CEO's taking money out of one column in the spread sheet and put it in the biomed column to make this change.

But hope springs eternal in the heart of an optimist and a biomed.

Thanks,
