Developing New Practice Guidelines

Thanks for all your input so far in connecting with us and your fellow biomeds on our best practices blog. We love to hear about what works for you, but we also want to know how you come up with new procedures.

All best practices have to come from somewhere, and developing the real gems takes time and teamwork.

One method of developing them that some hospitals are starting to adopt is to form a best practices committee with members from different departments to evaluate the effectiveness of new solutions and develop new practice guidelines for the facility. Committees then vet ideas and hammer them into workable procedures.

Topics the committees address include working with IT to find solutions to cross-departmental problems and evaluating scheduled maintenance procedures for specific types of equipment.

How do you find out what works?

In developing new practice guidelines and service protocols, a research on the particular subject must be first conducted and established.  Utilizing acceptable manufacturer's recommendations, and established good engineering practices, that meet known industry standards are all considered and then included as an integral component of the practice standards being developed. Once all necessary steps and procedures were identified, organized, dry runs and testing for efficacy will be the next step in this development processes.  During this phase a repeatable and acceptable outcome must be documented especially if the expected results has to conform with any state and local regulatory requirements. After the testing phase and expected results were satisfactorily met and documented,  the  new practice guidelines can then be submitted to the Corporate QA  and Safety Committees for final evaluations prior to its adoption and inclusion into Standards Manual of the institution.
