Vacation or Service Goals? Finding Time for Everything

by Julie Kirst 1/4/2011 8:33:00 AM

Welcome to 2011! We are looking forward to hearing more of your comments on this blog and as a reminder, if you have an idea or question you’d like to post, e-mail me at jkirst@allied360.com and I’ll do it on your behalf.

As we start the New Year and think of making changes, we need to look at what requires a change. In our December issue we posted the results of our 2010 Compensation Survey. A particular point I addressed in my Up Front column involved comments by a number of people who said their raises depended on meeting service goals, but to meet those goals they had to forfeit vacation time.

I invited those of you who have come up against this problem and mastered it to blog here with us and share your ideas. If you haven’t dealt with this but have a solution or suggestion, I’m sure your colleagues will look forward to hearing them.

With limited staffing and more work, how have you allowed for vacation time but still met your service goals?

Setting up an internship program with the local Community College or Technical schools offering  biomedical or electronic instrumentation programs can provide be a good resource for the extra manpower needed to meet one's service goals. Although this may require an initial orientation and job familiarity, a minimum 6 months of free help from these interns can be used to free up some vacation time for the regular staff.  This work scheme was proven to be a win -win situation for both the interns, for a credited hands-on learned experience, and for the local biomed dept. for having free extra manpower. Having a good internship program will also provide the industry with a pre-oriented /trained pool of future employees.

Great advice vsarmiento. In fact, some of our Soapbox columns have touted the benefits of interns, as well as managers in articles. We'll cover it a bit more in an upcoming feature, but it's an excellent solution that will keep regular employees happy and healthy, and it will advance an intern's career. Thanks!
