Liability and Personal Medical Devices

The line between devices used in the home and the obligation of hospitals has been gaining attention lately as more and more patients find themselves on their own turf still hooked up to medical equipment. Somewhat related to this is a question from a clinical engineering supervisor who is looking for some help from his colleagues in the field. Here’s what he said:

“Our hospitals insurance provider is trying to get us to check patients’ personal insulin pumps before they can use them in the hospital. I cannot find anything out there where anyone does this. Can you give me any direction and advice?”

Have any of you come up against this or a similar situation? Can you offer any suggestions or provide any direction? We’ll look forward to your ideas.

IMOE, Personally owned medical equipment brought in or intended to be used by patients during their stay in the hospital, needs to be checked and pass the local biomed inspection protocols, defined in their local equipment management plan or in the hospital's policies and procedures. The same protocols applies for all hospital-owned equipment, used either within the hospital premises or used in patient's home that are still under the care of that hospital .. If still not sure on what protocols to follow, local biomed needs to get a written statement from their Risk Management (hospital lawyers) for guidance on the matter..
