Product Review
The stage was set for
Medicines Digital Transformation, with thousands of visitors and
exhibitors coalescing at the 88th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the
Radiological Society of North America (RSNA of Oak Brook, Ill.), Dec. 1-5, 2002, in
Chicagos sprawling McCormick Place. The show and its theme recognized
the role digital technology is playing in radiologys expanding influence in
healthcare.
Hologic Inc.s (Bedford, Mass.) Lorad Selenia full-field digital mammography
system made its RSNA debut fresh off its October 2002 premarket approval (PMA) supplement
from the FDA. Selenia uses Hologics DirectRay amorphous-selenium, direct-to-digital
image receptor to generate digital mammographic images that can be used for screening and
diagnosis of breast cancer. Hologics DirectRay division (Newark, Del.) produces the
patented digital image receptor.
The company also plans to tap into the existing upgrade marketplace, which includes
more than 3,000 installed Lorad M-IV screen-film mammography systems that can be converted
to direct-to-digital capability in the field.
Canon Medical Systems (Irvine, Calif.) debuted several new products at the show.
Designed for all general radiography applications, the Canon CXDI-40G Digital
Radiography System can be installed in a table or used with an upright or universal stand.
The system combines the Canon amorphous silicon flat panel sensor with a 17-by-17-inch
image area with smaller and lighter housing. This allows a wider range of applications and
more possibilities for retrofitting with older systems.
