 Bright White Lamp
The Cermax® Xenon by PerkinElmer (Fremont, Calif) is used in demanding medical lighting applications such as surgical endoscopy, diagnostic endoscopy, surgical headlamps, surgical microscopy, phototherapy, and biofluorescence. It offers high-intensity white light and numerous advantages over halogen, mercury, or quartz xenon lamps. The bright, white light enables the viewing of the true colors of tissue and vasculature, allowing for accurate diagnoses. Cermax lamps have a compact yet rugged design, are highly reliable, are environmentally-safe, and mercury-free. (800) 775- 6786; www.optoelectronics.perkinelmer.com.

 UV Germicidal Lamps
Bulbtronics (Farmingdale, NY) sources germicidal lamps from a variety of manufacturers, including GE, Osram Sylvania, Philips, UVP, and Voltarc. Technical service representatives are available to identify the correct ultraviolet (UV) germicidal lamp for the application. Germicidal lamps transmit UV light at 254 nm. This wavelength is lethal to microorganisms and inhibits the reproduction of various bacteria, viruses, and mold spores by preventing DNA replication. In health care, UV germicidal lamps reduce the spread of disease, especially in areas where the risk of infection is high. Tubular, or “slimline,” germicidal lamps are typically used in applications requiring high UV intensity for water sterilization, air purification in duct systems, and food-production disinfection. Low Energy-Consuming T8 System
Philips Lighting Co, the Somerset, NJ-based lighting company affiliated with Royal Philips Electronics, introduces the 25-watt ALTO Energy Advantage T8 system, a low energy-consuming 4-foot T8 system. Developed jointly with UK-based Advance Lighting, the system operates on instant-start or programmed-start ballasts that supply 550 starting voltage. The system, comprised of a Philips 25-Watt ALTO Energy Advantage T8 lamp and an Advance high-efficiency Optanium™ electronic ballast, reduces energy consumption by more than 45% in applications using T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts, and by 20%– 30% for applications using conventional T8 lamps and electronic ballasts. www.lighting.philips.com.

 Mercury Short- Arc Lamps
Specialty Bulb Co Inc (Bohemia, NY) offers mercury short arc lamps for the medical industry. The benefits of these lamps are their high radiance, multiline spectrum, high radiant power in the ultraviolet and visible range, long life, and high optical quality. Mercury short arc lamps are available in wattages ranging from 50 to 3,500 watts. Lamps rated at less than 200 watts are used predominantly in scientific and technical applications, including fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence endoscopy, optical wave guide application, and Schlieren photography. Lamps rated at 350 watts and above are used for the fabrication of electronic chips in microlithography. (800) 331-BULB; www.bulbspecialists.com.
