Ingredients for Success
As the Greek philoso-pher Heraclitus said, Everything flows
and nothing stays
You cant step twice into the same river. And so it is
for each of us as we enter a new year and face changes in our lives and jobs. Personally,
I cant think of a better way to have begun my new job as editor of 24x7
than to have attended the North Carolina Biomedical Association symposium at the Pinehurst
Resort and Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, NC, in December. The word
gracious comes to mind when I think of the hospitality I experienced at this
charming resort that opened more than 100 years ago and appears to have glided easily into
modern times. I often wish my transitions could be as smooth, especially when it comes to
staying on top of the latest technology.
Fortunately for all of us, the symposium showcased some of the latest medical
technologies available. According to organizers, attendance and vendor participation were
up from last year.
The well-organized event truly had something for everyone with classes ranging from
general biomedical to specialized ones on such topics as nuclear medicine and CT
principles. Other classes focused on the interpersonal aspect, to help biomeds secure a
job or advance their careers, and covered interviewing, customer service, and management
skills.
The numerous seminars and classes I attended gave me a broad view of the issues
important to you, our readers. One resounding topic at the conference was the continued
integration of the biomed and information technology worlds and the importance of
embracing this inevitable change. The networking classes were well attended and,
acknowledging your interest in the subject, 24x7 will continue to keep you
updated on this trend.
I also had the pleasure of speaking with many of you, which further expanded my
understanding of the importance of your work and the challenges you face. I came away from
these conversations with a sense of the passion, commitment, and enthusiasm you bring to
your vocation, which are ingredients for success in any business. I was also impressed by
your eagerness to share your knowledge and information. These attributes serve a person
well as they face new and ever-changing technologies, procedures, and policies.
While at some level adjusting to new ideas and circumstances is difficult for most of
us, change often provides an opportunity to expand our world and envision new approaches
to old ways and problems. Sometimes what we are most resistant to turns out to benefit us
in ways previously unimagined.
As we each step into the flow of a new year, I wish for smooth transitions and may our
flexibility and willingness to see our work in a new light lead each of us to greater
fulfillment and success.
