Leslie R. Atles, CCE, CBET, presented the Medical Equipment & Technology Association (META) with two educational scholarships and two copies of his book at the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation conference earlier this month.

Atles’ recently released book, A Practicum for Biomedical Engineering & Management Issues, is a collaborative effort that includes contributions from more than 30 industry experts as authors, peer reviewers, and advisors. Professional organizations and health care companies also lent their assistance. Atles designed the book to help broaden and enhance the training of BMETs and CEs.

“The intention is to help provide the novice with a sound foundation to build on, and to give the seasoned professional an opportunity to revisit and review important technologies,” Atles said. “Whether you are new to the field, or an established professional, hopefully you will find this book of value both in the classroom and in your personal and professional libraries.”

A Practicum for Biomedical Engineering & Management Issues focuses on three principal areas: management, technologies, and reference information. To thank those who spent their time working on the publication, Atles created two scholarship donations of $500 each and included two copies of his book.

“It is only through the expertise and generosity of these various contributing parties that I have been able to successfully complete this project,” Atles said. “The scholarship given to META is my attempt to give back, in a small but heartfelt way, something to the field that I feel so fortunate to be a part of.”

According to META board member Mary Coker, Ex Officio, META—an organization for professionals that service and support equipment in the health care industry—will advise educators that the scholarships are available and the criteria for a biomed to be considered for one the scholarships.

“This is a beginning,” she said. “Les started it, and it will now be ongoing.” Coker added that she hopes other organizations will consider adding to the scholarship fund. Bookmark and Share
