In May of this year, Dennis McCutcheon, director, MedEquip Missions, Asheville, NC, and biomeds Monte Oitker and Casey McCutcheon traveled to Guatemala for two weeks to fix medical equipment at five hospitals and turn an empty room into a biomed shop.
According to Casey McCutcheon, who used her vacation to contribute her skills to this MedEquip mission and is Dennis McCutcheon’s daughter, “We found ourselves in mounds of broken equipment and left behind mere anthills. It is a frustration to not be able to repair everything.”
The biomedical team stayed with Dennis and Doris Rice, missionaries in Guatemala for Vine International Ministries, and had the use of their van.
Monte Oitker, a member of the biomed team at World Medical Missions, the medical arm Samaritans Purse, Boone, NC, also brought his carpentry, problem solving, and electrical troubleshooting skills.
“At five hospitals we repaired patient monitors, defibs, suction pumps, ESUs, EKGs, and taught the national staff simple testing and repair techniques,” Casey said. “In return we were blessed with good food and the obvious gratitude of the people we served.”
