New ISO Symbol Standard Story Tops the Charts

News of the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) plans to help standardize symbols relating to medical devices was the most read story on our Web site last week.

The ISO recently developed a new standard—ISO 15223-1—that proposes a methodology for the development and presentation of symbols related to medical devices, which can be understood independent of language. The standard is subdivided into two parts with the first part dealing with general requirements.

“There was a need for systematic methodology for the development and presentation of symbols proposed for adoption in ISO 15223-1,” said Leighton Hansel, convener of the ISO working group that developed the standard. “Part 2 was developed to meet that need and includes detailed processes to reduce the probability of misinterpretation of symbols.”

Additional information is available in the original Weekly Jolt story or via the ISO’s announcement.
