Siemens, Malvern, Pa will donate a new Magnetom Essenza MRI worth some $800,000 to Sumter Regional Hospital, Americus, Ga, in recognition of the facility’s struggle to rebuild after a devastating 2007 tornado.

Sumter’s compelling story—submitted as an entry for the company’s 2007 Win an MRI contest—prompted the gift, which will be delivered after the facility gets back on track and is able to support it. The small, rural hospital provides urgent and routine care. It was not the contest winner, but was deemed a worthy recipient of the equipment.

The MRI was developed for the small hospital market to deliver imaging services in neurology, orthopedics, body imaging, angiography, cardiology, breast imaging, oncology, and pediatric imaging. Introduced in October 2007, if offers 1.5-Tesla magnet strength and generates high-resolution images.
